Underkeep Hidden Walls: How to Find Secret Passages
How to find Underkeep hidden walls: the stone-sliding sound cue, which dead ends to test, how the map helps, and what to do when a wall will not open.
Underkeep hides passages behind ordinary-looking walls. The tell is audio: press against a dead-end wall and listen for stone sliding. If you hear it, the wall is a door, not a boundary.

How do you detect a hidden wall?
Walk the perimeter of every room and press into dead ends. The game plays a stone-sliding sound when a wall can move. No sound means no passage.
That is the whole mechanic. There is no detection stat and no spell that reveals secrets in the tooltips covered here. It is a habit, not a build choice.
| Cue | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Stone sliding | Hidden passage or movable wall |
| Hollow footstep sound | False floor or pit nearby |
| Visible crack | Pickaxe or Reinforced Pickaxe |
| Loose object | Pushable, often a switch |
| Pressure plate | Step or weigh it down |
Do not confuse a cracked rock with a hidden wall. Cracks are opened with a pickaxe; hidden walls respond to pressure and sound.
Which dead ends are worth testing?
Test every dead end that has no door, chest, or decoration. A dead end with a torch or a statue is often a puzzle, not a secret. A plain dead end at the end of a long corridor is the classic hidden-wall spot.
Priority order:
- Dead ends beside a boss room.
- Dead ends in the first dungeon, where tutorials hide loot.
- Dead ends next to a Waystone Gate.
- Dead ends behind a waterfall, tree, or mine support.
- Any wall that looks slightly different from its neighbours.
The first dungeon teaches the mechanic, so test there before you rely on it later.
How does the map help?
The automap records doors, but a hidden wall may appear as a wall until you open it. Use notes: mark the spot the moment you hear the sound, even if you cannot open it yet.
A note like "sound, north dead end" is enough. You will remember the room when you come back.
The stone-sliding cue is quiet. Headphones or a higher effects volume make hidden walls much easier to find.
What else hides secrets?
Hidden walls are one of several secret types. The same exploration pass should test pressure plates, pushable objects, fragile objects, and signposts.
| Secret type | How to trigger |
|---|---|
| Hidden wall | Press against it, listen for stone |
| Pressure plate | Step on it or place weight |
| Pushable statue | Push in a direction, note the reset |
| Fragile object | Attack or interact to break |
| Grave | Shovel, costs food |
| Gold vein | Golden Chisel |
| Locked chest | Lockpick Tools |
| Collapsed rock | Pickaxe |
Some puzzles reset when you leave the room or push the wrong object. The demo's statue corridor resets on entry, according to the developer. Treat every statue puzzle as resettable and note the starting positions before you push.
What if a hidden wall will not open?
Three possibilities: it is not a hidden wall, it needs a quest flag, or it is opened from the other side. Mark it and continue; most secrets are optional.
If the wall is tied to the Silver Key route, the Silver Key page→ explains the Orc Camp chain. If it is the Gravewood Crypt gargoyle room, the Gravewood Crypt page→ covers the stuck-statue problem.
Do hidden walls contain required progression?
Some do, most do not. The main route is gated by keys, tools, and bosses; hidden walls mostly hide treasure, shortcuts, and optional rooms. Skipping them costs loot, not the ending.
That said, a shortcut found early saves food and rests. On a blind run, testing dead ends is cheaper than backtracking.
How many hidden walls are in Underkeep?
There is no complete public count. Community reports describe the mechanic and several locations, but not a full list. This page avoids inventing locations; use the sound test and mark what you find.
If you are mapping the game yourself, keep a list by area. The map page→ has the confirmed area names to organize it.
FAQ
Is there a spell that reveals hidden walls?
No reveal spell is listed in the community skill data. Detection is audio and physical.
Do hidden walls reset?
They stay open once found. Puzzle objects may reset; opened passages do not.
Can you open a hidden wall with a pickaxe?
No. Pickaxes open cracked rocks. Hidden walls respond to the wall-press interaction.
